The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is a groundbreaking railway construction project located in the Alps of Switzerland. Recognized as the world's longest and deepest traffic tunnel, the GBT features a main route length of 57.09 km. This infrastructure includes two single-track tunnel tubes, each approximately 9.0 km long, and cross-passages every 312 meters. It is designed to offer a flat, low-level route through the Alps, streamlining transportation and improving connectivity across the region.

Tre kjernedeler i prosjektet

Alptransit Gotthard Base Tunnel encompasses several key sections, including Bodio, Faido, and Sedrun, each with distinct construction characteristics. The Bodio section involves excavating two parallel single-track railway tunnel tubes, each spanning 30 km. Excavation is conducted using Gripper TBMs and includes cross-passages every 300 meters. The Faido section focuses on a 2.5 km multi-function station featuring track changeovers for both tunnel tubes, emergency stop stations with exhaust air systems, escape tunnels, and technical equipment caverns. The Sedrun section, Lot 360, includes parallel single-track railway tunnels and a multi-function station with ventilation structures and changeover connections, accessible via a 1 km access tunnel and two 800-meter-deep shafts.

Håndterte komplekse geologiske utfordringer

Given the complex geology of the Alpine region, the project faced notable challenges. The Bodio section required dealing with seismic disturbances, rockfalls, and squeezing rock zones. The Faido section encountered logistical challenges, such as convergences and methane gas deflagration. Special heading techniques and deformable steel structures were used to navigate the Clavaniev and Tavetsch intermediate massif zones in the Sedrun section. Excavation materials were reused and processed for concrete production, ensuring efficient resource utilization. Blasting, shotcrete, anchors, and netting were employed to secure the tunnel structures.

Prosjektledelse og utstyr

Construction management for this monumental project was carried out by Lombardi SA in Bodio, Amberg Engineering AG in Faido, and a consortium of engineering firms for the Sedrun section. The project also involved extensive shell equipment installations, including electrical systems, control technology, operational ventilation, and fire protection measures. AlpTransit Gotthard AG served as the building owner, overseeing a project that commenced in January 2001 and was completed in January 2014.

Overall, the Gotthard Base Tunnel project, with a total estimated construction value of 4.3496 billion CHF (inclusive of all sections), represents a significant infrastructural achievement. By improving transportation efficiency and connectivity, the project offers substantial benefits to society, fostering economic growth and enhancing the quality of transport services.
