Modulær lakseproduksjon på land

The Onnest land-based aquaculture facility in Hirtshals, Denmark, is a new construction project centered on the implementation of advanced Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) technology for sustainable fish farming. The main phase of the project focuses on the grow-out stage where the RAS systems will be installed to cultivate salmon on land, minimizing environmental impact and improving fish welfare. The project is designed to have a modular setup facilitating a phased build-out with a planned total production capacity of up to 10,000 tons of salmon.

Optiras leverer avansert RAS-teknologi

Optiras AS has been selected as the system supplier for the RAS technology after an intensive evaluation period of nearly ten months. Optiras is responsible for delivering their patented OptiRAS modules, which are characterized by high water turnover rates, automated system control, and integrated water treatment. These self-contained modules allow for efficient, rapid installation and the flexibility to scale production in line with market demand and company strategy. Additionally, Assentoft Aqua is appointed as a key equipment supplier for the hatchery and juvenile phases of production, underscoring a comprehensive and integrated approach across the production chain.

Bærekraft og energieffektiv drift

A key feature of the project is its strong focus on sustainable and energy-efficient operation, leveraging circular economy principles. The OptiRAS concept prioritizes fish welfare, water quality, and ecological responsibility, aiming to set new industry standards for environmentally friendly aquaculture. This approach highlights a long-term collaboration and commitment to develop scalable, technology-driven solutions that optimize resource use while minimizing biological and operational risks.

Strømforsyningsproblemer truer fremdrift

However, the project currently faces significant challenges related to unreliable and insufficient electricity supply in the local North Jutland power grid. This unforeseen issue threatens the project's feasibility by potentially forcing the developers to delay, downscale, or even relocate the facility to another country. The electricity supply uncertainty also complicates finalizing crucial contracts and agreements needed for continued progress, putting the entire construction and operational timeline at risk.

Eierskap og lokal økonomisk effekt

Ownership of the project is held predominantly by Samuel Muren and Håkon Volden who each own 45%, with the remaining shares held by Linn Indestrand. The modular nature of the facility's design allows for flexible phased construction, enabling gradual capacity increases as infrastructure challenges and market conditions permit. Furthermore, the project is anticipated to create significant benefits for the local economy through innovation in sustainable fish farming and bolstering Denmark's position in the land-based aquaculture industry.
