Banebrytende landbasert oppdrett

The Laxey Atlantic Salmon Smolt and Grow-Out Facility is a pioneering land-based aquaculture project located on Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland. The facility focuses on producing Atlantic salmon smolt and grow-out stages using state-of-the-art Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology. Originally part of a broader plan to establish Iceland’s first advanced land-based RAS hatchery, the project leverages unique natural features such as volcanic lava sand filtration and borehole saltwater to provide clean, pathogen-free water with ideal temperatures for salmon farming.

Investering og produksjonskapasitet

The project is financed with approximately 42 million euros and encompasses the design, construction, and operation of an integrated salmon farming complex. Key components include an incubation unit, three RAS smolt systems designed to produce around 4 million smolt annually at 100 grams each, a post-smolt system with six large 900 m3 tanks supplied by deep borehole saltwater, and six grow-out modules. Each grow-out module features eight large tanks of 5,000 m3, totaling 40,000 m3 per module, enabling a gradual scale-up of production capacity. The first grow-out module is scheduled for stocking in mid-2025, producing about 5,300 tons annually, with plans to expand production capacity to approximately 32,000 tons by 2031.

AKVA som hovedleverandør

AKVA Group serves as the primary contractor and technological partner, responsible for the full mechanical and electrical installation, component supply, and design evaluation of the RAS systems and grow-out modules. Their involvement has been continuous since contract signing in 2022, demonstrating strong collaboration and project management. AKVA's expertise includes its Zero Water Concept, which addresses challenges from limited freshwater availability and promotes sustainability within the facility’s operations.

Lokale fordeler og bærekraft

The project offers significant societal benefits, including revitalizing the local economy of Heimaey’s small community and fostering sustainable food production by reducing dependency on wild fisheries and marine-based aquaculture licenses, which are limited in Iceland. By operating a land-based system with full control over smolt production, Laxey improves fish welfare, biosecurity, and product quality, while minimizing environmental impacts such as escapes and pollution typically associated with sea-based farming.

Miljøvennlig vannbehandling

Environmental considerations are integral to the project’s design and operation, focusing on efficient water reuse through advanced RAS technology and sourcing saltwater from deep boreholes to ensure pathogen-free conditions. Utilizing natural volcanic lava sand filtration combined with the RAS approach supports a highly biosecure and environmentally responsible salmon farming process. This method also mitigates risks linked to unsuitable sea temperatures and limited sea-based farming licenses, which have constrained traditional aquaculture development in Iceland.

Tidsplan og milepæler

The project timeline began with contract signing and design development in 2022, followed by commissioning of the incubation unit in November 2023 and the RAS smolt systems by early 2024. Construction of post-smolt facilities is nearly complete, while the first grow-out module is under active construction and scheduled for stocking by mid-2025. Funding and construction plans for subsequent grow-out modules are targeted for 2024 and 2025 respectively, aligning with the goal to achieve full-scale production by 2031.
