The Lindholmen and Linnéplatsen Tram Tunnel Connection is a major infrastructure project in Gothenburg aiming to build a new tram tunnel that connects Lindholmen with Linnéplatsen via an underground route beneath the Göta River. The tunnel includes an underground stop at Stigberget and passes under Slottsskogen park, a central recreational area. This tram tunnel will shorten travel times significantly-from approximately 25 minutes down to about six minutes between Lindholmen and Linnéplatsen-while enhancing the capacity and robustness of Gothenburg’s public transport network by adding an additional river crossing for trams.

Construction of the tunnel entails complex engineering challenges due to the diverse geological conditions along the route. The section between Linnéplatsen and Vegagatan passes through both rock and sensitive clay soils, requiring sophisticated groundwater and hydrogeological management to prevent impacts such as ground settlement in nearby vulnerable areas like Olivedal. To address these challenges, the tunnel is planned as a watertight structure using concrete sealing and lining techniques to block water ingress. Additionally, measures such as re-pumping water into the ground will be employed to mitigate changes in groundwater pressure and protect geothermal heating systems, water supply for vegetation, and building foundations. These considerations are integral to the railway plan and the environmental impact assessment, which are scheduled for submission to the Swedish Transport Administration by the end of 2027.

The project is led by the land development department of the City of Gothenburg, with COWI developing the railway plan that regulates land use, track infrastructure design, and also includes the environmental assessments. Key partners include Arkitema, responsible for designing the Linnéplatsen stop, and AFRY, coordinating the technical system design. This multi-disciplinary collaboration ensures that the project integrates technical, environmental, and social considerations to promote safe, sustainable, and efficient delivery. The project also includes extensive community engagement and social impact analyses focusing on safety, accessibility, and attractiveness, especially around the Linnéplatsen hub and adjacent Slottsskogen park.

The area of Linnéplatsen is undergoing a detailed development plan aimed at improving traffic flow, safety, and the public realm for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and public transport users. The project team conducted thorough analyses using aerial imagery and social surveys to design infrastructure that balances the needs of diverse social groups, including vulnerable users such as children and people with disabilities. Feedback collected through surveys, interviews, and focus groups helps shape the design to ensure both safety and vitality in the urban environment.

Planlagt byggestart og åpning

The timeline for the project includes a planned public consultation of the railway and development plans in spring 2027. Following the consultations and formal adoption of the plans, permit applications are expected to be submitted in 2029. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2031 and continue through to 2039, with the tunnel and associated infrastructure scheduled to open for tram operation by 2039. The project’s long schedule reflects the complexity and scale of the construction, technical challenges, and thorough regulatory and community engagement processes.
