Ny tramtunnel under Göta älv

The Lindholmen and Linnéplatsen Tram Tunnel Connection is a major infrastructure project in Gothenburg aiming to build a new tram tunnel beneath the Göta River and the city's central park, Slottsskogen. This tunnel will connect the districts of Lindholmen and Linnéplatsen, featuring an underground stop at Stigberget. The construction will significantly reduce travel time on this route from 25 to approximately six minutes, increase public transport capacity, and provide an additional reliable river crossing for the tram network.

Tverrfaglig planlegging og godkjenning

Led by the City of Gothenburg's land development department, the project involves multidisciplinary collaboration with companies such as COWI, AFRY, and Arkitema. COWI, in particular, is responsible for planning and engineering tasks including preparing the railway plan, which governs land use, track infrastructure, and integrates the environmental impact assessment. The railway and local development plans, critical for organized and safe construction, will be submitted to the Swedish Transport Administration for approval by the end of 2027.

The tunnel construction faces notable technical and environmental challenges. The route includes building through sections of both rock and clay, with complex groundwater conditions that require detailed hydrogeological assessments to manage risks. Sensitive clay soils and vulnerable building foundations nearby heighten concerns about ground settlement. The project plans to construct a watertight tunnel using concrete sealing and lining to prevent water ingress, along with groundwater management measures like pumping water back into the ground to maintain pressure balance and protect heating systems and local vegetation.

A strong environmental focus guides the project, addressing risks such as contamination during riverbed dredging and minimizing impacts on groundwater and surrounding ecosystems. Experts from various disciplines work closely alongside the city and partner firms to ensure compliance with environmental standards while integrating urban planning priorities. Community engagement has informed plans for the Linnéplatsen area, aiming to improve safety and attractiveness by optimizing pedestrian, cyclist, motorist, and public transport traffic flows, with special emphasis on vulnerable groups such as children and people with disabilities.

The timeline foresees a public consultation phase in spring 2027, followed by permit applications planned for 2029. Construction is expected to run from 2031 to 2039, with the first tram operating through the new tunnel by 2039. The project is designed to support Gothenburg’s anticipated population growth of 100,000 people in the coming decade by promoting sustainable transport, reducing pressure on existing infrastructure, and enhancing reliability and capacity within the city's public transit network.
